For schools

Consumer Education in Schools (CEIS) program

The Office of Gaming and Racing and Consumer Affairs Victoria have worked in partnership to incorporate problem and responsible gambling content within the existing Consumer Education in Schools (CEIS) program.

Our aim is to educate young people about:

  • the risks of gambling
  • the benefits of using effective coping skills, particularly problem solving skills as applied to personal issues

Activities also aim to enable young people :

  • to understand when gambling becomes a problem
  • the effects that gambling can have on both the individual, and friends and family

Problem Gambling – A resource guide for schools

Problem gambling: a guide for Victorian schools provides expert practical information and advice for the broader school community about problem gambling as a health and social issue.

It also provides tools for identifying and responding when gambling is affecting a student (either their own gambling or the gambling of a family member).

The guide is consistent with early intervention strategies for risk taking behaviour. A range of people may find this resource helpful including:

  • student services officers
  • guidance officers
  • student welfare officers and
  • teachers

It is hoped that the guide will also trigger dialogue within school communities on the subject of gambling and its impacts, and lay the foundation for further work within schools on this issue.
